Governor Greg Abbott today issued a new executive order, rescinding the statewide mask mandate to fight the COVID-19 pandemic. The Governor also announced that all businesses will be allowed to reopen at 100 percent capacity. The rules take effect on March 10th.
“With the medical advancements of vaccines and antibody therapeutic drugs,” he said, “Texas now has the tools to protect Texans from the virus.”
The Governor said individuals and businesses are still free to follow and implement their own rules to protect themselves and their loved ones, but the state mandates “are no longer needed.”
Despite Gov. Abbott’s announcement, the Harris and Fort Bend County judges are urging local residents to continue wearing masks and practice social distancing.
Harris County Judge Lina Hidalgo said her concern is that citizens will mistakenly think the pandemic is over and they can let down their guard on the risks of infection. “We’re not quite there yet,” said Judge Hidalgo.
Fort Bend County Judge KP George similarly advised residents to stay the course. “In Fort Bend County, we will continue to listen to the doctors, the facts and the science,” he said.
Missouri City’s COVID-19 infection and hospitalization rates are trending downward. At the end of January, there were 680 active cases in the City. That number is now down to 280. Regionally, the hospitalization rate is around 9.35 percent.
The focus of fighting the virus has shifted from testing to vaccination. Today, President Biden promised that there will be enough vaccine available for every adult in the United States by the end of May. The number of approved vaccination providers in Missouri City has continued to increase. Besides the County’s vaccination hub at the Houston Community College campus on Texas Parkway, there are an additional 29 locations in Missouri City where residents can get vaccinated.
